Damiana

Damiana has an exotic history. While this herbs’ lore is often associated with its history of use in potions to arouse amorous passion, it is more reasonably associated with use to produce Mexican liqueurs, tonics and herbal teas. The aroma of the plant and essential oil is unique; pungent, bitter-sweet and similar to stronger chamomile essential oils. 
Mexican folklore claims that herbal infusions of Damiana were key components in the "original" margaritas. Damiana essential oil has an aroma that suggests novelty and curiosity. 
 
The Damiana plant is a small shrub native to Central, South America and the southwestern United States. It blossoms in early-to-late summer, followed by small fruits tasting somewhat like figs or bitter-sweet dates. The essential oil is made by distillation of the leaves and small blossoms.
